Getting around Lilongwe
Lilongwe spreads out, so most trips mean a minibus, a taxi or your own wheels. Here is how each option works and what to expect.

Arriving
Kamuzu International Airport
Kamuzu International Airport (LLW) lies about 7 km north of City Centre, near Lumbadzi. It is Malawi's main gateway alongside Blantyre, handling regional and connecting international flights. There is no train or metro link; arrange a hotel transfer or taxi in advance, as the airport is a fair way from town and public options are limited late at night.
Around town
Minibuses, taxis and driving
Minibuses are the cheapest way to move, running fixed informal routes between Old Town, City Centre and residential Areas — crowded but authentic and very affordable. Taxis and ride apps are simpler for visitors; agree a fare or confirm the meter before setting off. Car hire gives the most freedom for exploring beyond the city, though roads can be potholed and driving is on the left. Distances between Areas are real, so factor in travel time.
