What the city runs on

Unlike Blantyre, Malawi's commercial capital, Lilongwe's economy is dominated by government and public institutions: the civil service is the single largest employer. Around it sit finance and banking, retail and wholesale trade, construction, transport and tourism. The city is also the marketing hub for the Central Region's agriculture, above all tobacco, Malawi's leading export.

Kanengo and the markets

Kanengo, in the north of the city, is the main industrial zone — food processing, tobacco storage and the auction floors, maize storage and light manufacturing. Everyday commerce happens in the markets of Old Town and the Central Market, while modern retail has grown through shopping malls in and around City Centre. Banks and mobile-money agents are widespread across both centres.
