Hotels near Kamuzu International Airport

Kamuzu International Airport sits north of Lilongwe, off the M1. There are few hotels right at the terminal, so the honest advice is to plan your stay and transfer around an early flight or a late-night landing.

The lay of the land

Where the airport is — and what's around it

Kamuzu International Airport (airport code LLW) is Lilongwe's international gateway, lying north of the city just off the M1, the main road that runs up the spine of Malawi. Distances quoted for it vary depending on where you measure from and which route you take: it is commonly described as around 7 km north of the city centre, though by road and depending on the exact starting point the drive can feel more like 15 to 25 km. Either way, it is a straightforward journey on a good tarred road, typically 20 to 40 minutes from the main hotel districts outside peak traffic.

The important thing to understand is that the airport sits in a relatively rural, undeveloped stretch north of the built-up city. Unlike some capitals, Lilongwe does not have a dense cluster of airport hotels lining the terminal approach. There are comparatively few places to stay immediately at the airport, which is exactly why most travellers base themselves in City Centre or the residential Areas and pre-arrange a transfer for their flight. Being honest about this up front saves disappointment: do not expect to walk out of arrivals into a row of branded airport hotels.

So where do most people stay?

For the vast majority of arrivals and departures, the practical answer is to stay in City Centre, which is the closest of the main hotel districts to the airport road and home to full-service hotels such as the top-end Sunbird Capital Hotel and the Umodzi Park / President Hotel complex, plus various mid-range options. From City Centre the run north to the airport is quick and simple. Travellers wanting a quieter, greener setting sometimes choose an out-of-town lodge on the northern side of the city, such as Kumbali Country Lodge, which is closer to the airport side of Lilongwe than Old Town is and can arrange transfers.

Planning the transfer

Early flights and late arrivals

Because there is no ready supply of hotels at the terminal, the smart move is to plan the transfer rather than chase a bed next to the runway. Most hotels and lodges in Lilongwe will organise an airport pickup or drop-off if you ask when booking, and this is by far the most reliable option for a pre-dawn departure or a late-night landing. Agree the price and timing in advance, confirm the day before, and make sure the driver has your flight number so they can adjust for delays.

  • For an early flight: arrange a hotel transfer or a trusted taxi the night before, and allow generous time — international check-in closes well ahead of departure and the road, while good, is unlit in places.
  • For a late arrival: book your onward transfer before you fly, so a named driver is waiting in arrivals rather than you negotiating a fare late at night after a long journey.
  • Avoid winging it: public minibuses do not serve the terminal conveniently for luggage-laden travellers, so a pre-booked car is worth the modest cost.
  • Keep kwacha handy: have some Malawian kwacha for tips, snacks and any airport fees; card acceptance can be limited.

Tip: If your itinerary has a very early departure and you would rather not rely on a dawn drive, ask your City Centre or northern-side lodge specifically whether it can guarantee a driver at that hour. Many can, and a confirmed pre-booked transfer from a comfortable hotel usually beats hunting for scarce accommodation close to the runway.

Making the choice

Balancing convenience and comfort

Weigh the small time saving of staying on the northern, airport-facing side of the city against the wider choice, dining and services you get in the main hotel districts. For a single night before an early flight, proximity and a reliable transfer matter most. For a longer trip, it usually makes more sense to stay where you actually want to be — near your meetings, the restaurants and the shops — and simply treat the airport run as one well-planned journey at each end. See the dedicated airport guide for arrival and departure practicalities, and the broader getting around pages for how Lilongwe's roads and transport fit together.

In short: there is no large stock of dedicated airport hotels at Kamuzu International, and that is fine. Pick a comfortable base in City Centre or a northern-side lodge, book your transfer ahead, and you will handle even the most awkward flight time with ease. If budget is your priority you will still likely sleep in Old Town and simply allow extra transfer time; if comfort before a long-haul departure is the goal, a City Centre hotel with a guaranteed early driver is the sensible, stress-free choice.
